Try this macro I put together. It's even better than the preview pane because you can
select multiple emails & view all the pictures at once.

It pops up a browser window to display the images & will not run executables or other
types of attachments.

It initially scales large images to the width of the browser popup, but you can click on
the image to toggle between full size & browser width. Hover over the image to see the
original size/scaled size. Resize the browser window, right-click on the background, &
choose 'Refresh' to resize all the images at once.

Click on the subject to bring up the original email.

See comments in the macro for more details.

Note that the 'Public Declare Sub Sleep...' statement need to go up at the very top before
any other macros.

Creative MP3 players ship with virus

Creative Labs has instituted a partial product recall after discovering that it accidentally shipped approximately 3,700 MP3 players contaminated with a Windows virus. Filesystems of affected 5GB Zen Neeons players contain a file infected with the Wullik-B (AKA Rays-A) email worm. The worm won't infect PCs unless the user browses the player files and clicks on the infected file, security firm F-Secure reports.
The worm involved in this case was first spotted in November 2003 and is fairly obscure. It's likely it got onto the infected players after a Windows PC used in Creative's production line got clobbered by the malware. Wullik-B spreads by either mass mailing copies of itself or by dropping itself into shared folders.

Creative is reporting that the virus affects players with serial numbers between 1230528000001 and 1230533001680 that have shipped in Japan in late July. According to a translation of Creative's statement (in Japanese) on the security flap the firm has temporarily stopped shipping Zen Neeons players while its partners assist in the recall of the infected batch. The firm said it has identified the source of the outbreak and fixed the problem. Creative said the virus contamination issue was confined to Zen Neeons players and didn't affect any of its other products. ®

Man dies playing computer games

A man dropped dead from exhaustion after playing computer games for more than two days.
The 28-year-old South Korean man known as Lee began his online session on August 3 at a cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, reports Reuters. He only budged from playing the "battle simulation games" to go to the toilet and to catch a few zeds.
After spending around 50 hours online Lee collapsed and died.
Reuters quotes police sources who said: "We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion." ®

My unhappy reaction to the Windows Hardware Engineering (WinHEC) 2005 build of Longhorn is now, shall we say, infamous. I wasn't trying to make a statement per se. But I did refer to the next major version of Windows as a 'train wreck,' so I guess it makes sense that people would latch onto that statement.

A little work on Microsoft's behalf could have prevented this problem. For example, a pre-WinHEC briefing in which the expectations of me and other Windows enthusiasts were suitably moderated would have been a great start. As it was, I went into WinHEC with high hopes, especially given the news that we would receive our first Longhorn build in a full year.

As I noted in my review of Longhorn build 5048 (see my review), however, my hopes were ill-placed. Build 5048 was a major step back from the previous build we had received (4074), from functional and features standpoints."

The folks at Redmond have long pointed to the user interface of the next generation Windows release as one of its major selling points. Now, Microsoft has chosen an official name for Longhorn with just that in mind. Enter: Windows Vista.
Word of the new name leaked out late Thursday after Microsoft tipped off journalists and enthusiast sites of an impending Longhorn-related announcement due Friday morning. "Windows Vista" was first mentioned at a Microsoft sales conference in Atlanta, according to reports.
A video has been made available to showcase the Windows Vista news.
Microsoft has also registered domains to go along with the newly christened Windows, including windowsvista.com. The domains were registered in late March, indicating the company made the decision even before WinHEC gave developers their first taste of Longhorn in over a year.
Windows Vista was initially reported by enthusiast site ActiveWin.
The word 'vista' defined means "pleasing view." According to a source, the name had been first floated about six months ago, although not much more had been said in the following months.
Sources tell BetaNews Microsoft is also rallying the troops -- MVPs and close partners -- to gear up for the Beta 1 release.
Longhorn, or Windows Vista, Beta 1 will be available by August 3, Microsoft said Friday. Beta 2 is expected in early 2006, with the final next generation Windows release expected by the end of next year.

German computer magazine C'T claims that by changing only 2 bytes from the file setupreg.hiv in Windows's XP Home kit, users can get access to certain functions only avalaible in Windows XP Professional, such as Remote Desktop, User management and enhanced security features.

C'T writes in its latest print issue (in German only) that you need to copy the root directory and the i386 directory of the WindowsXP CD to your harddisk, extract the Bootsector of your WindowsXP CD and change only 2 bytes in i386\Setupreg.hiv by using Regedit. In fact all you have to do is edit the binary key 'default' and change '01' to '00' and '02' to '00' in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Homekey\ControlSet001\Services\setupdd, C'T claims.

There is one big drawback, though. Users won't be able to install Service Pack 2, unless they integrate SP2 in the installation CD. And that's probably too much trouble for most users, who of course are better off buying a legal version anyway. It is expected that Microsoft will change the setup files soon to prevent this hack. ®"

My NB1 northbridge Fan on ABIT IS7 has died

My north bridge fan has started to die today. It dropped from about 3000rpm to 100rpm. I have had a look around the net and it appears that the northbridge fans abit uses are rubbish. Some people have been complaining that they have failed after a few months. Well nice to know that abit use quality componants in there products. I have contacted them to see if they will send me out a replacement, so watch this space.

The alternative is to get a www.zalman.co.kr heat sink but it looks like that may be a bit of a challenge to get it connected to my board.

Tiscali UK will begin to migrate broadband punters in London onto its new unbundled platform from tomorrow. Those getting the local loop unbundling (LLU) treatment shouldn't notice much difference - not to start with anyhow.

For Tiscali, though, uncoupling itself from BT and providing broadband directly to consumers by installing its own kit in exchanges means increased financial margins and better control over the service it provides to end users. It also gives the ISP the flexibility to offer faster services and new products such as internet telephony (VoIP) and video on demand.

Tiscali won't say how many punters it intends to migrate initially but revealed that 27 BT exchanges in London were part of this trial.

If this proves successful, Tiscali has ambitious plans to install its kit in a further 200 exchanges by the end of the year with an eye on 600 exchanges by 2006/7."

Within a couple of weeks of setting up this site i could be found on google, everything was fine, i was getting a few hits every day. But then one day google seemed to have removed my listings. now the only way you can find me from google is to search for defectivehw.blogspot.com. I have spoken to a few people and they seem to think i have been sand boxed.

google why cant you fine me??

2. I am using blogger - blogger is run by google.
3. I am using ad-sense - ad-sense has to crawl my site to display its adverts.

There's an Onion article we rather liked a while back that neatly lampooned the shaver business, in which Gilette, frustrated by Wilkinson Sword's move to three-blade razors, promptly shouts: 'F**k 'em - we're going to five blades.'

A similar war - real this time - appears to be breaking out between HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc (BD) proponents. Desperate to get HD DVD's capacity up to something closer to its rival's, Toshiba last week unveiled a three-layer disc that can hold 45GB.

Now - with more than a little 'f**k you!' implied if not stated - TDK has announced a four-layer BD.

The beast holds up to 100GB of data. More to the point, it's recordable, and according to TDK, can support a write-speed double that of today's 50GB BD-Rs - or 6x (216Mbps), in other words.

The disc uses TDK's Durabis coating, announced last January, which finally allows BDs to be used without a protective cartridge, though they remain rather less resilient to scratches than DVDs.

Getting discs up to 100GB and beyond - 200GB appears to be the limit - was always part of the Blu-ray plan. TDK has talked about making 100GB BDs in the past. Alas, today's announcement, made in Japanese-language newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun, gives no indication as to when these discs might actually appear on the market. ®"

There are a number of ways you can improve your chances of getting your blog indexed on Google, everyone is screaming “get lots of inbound links from high PR sites” which might work fine, but with the introduction of the NoFollow tag it’s not going to be that easy.

From what I’ve read, an easier way to do it is simply join Google AdSense. There is a bonus with doing this as well… you get paid to do it! When you put Google AdSense on your site, Google has to send a spider out to find what content you have on your site, and while they’re there that spider sends the info back to get your site listed in their search database.

Not a bad little trick? We’ll wait and see, I’m in the process of testing it out now, I’ll post some updates for you. Let’s hope it goes well!"

I have had another look around and i think i have found the solution.

in Windows Media Player go to Tools -> Plugins -> Options -> Background there should be a plugin called msn messenger music plugin, check it if its not already checked. if it is uncheck it restart and recheck it.

i have not been able to test this yet myself but it's worth a try :)

Reuters was temporarily forced to shut down its instant messaging service Thursday after a computer worm spread across its network. The culprit - Kelvir-U - is a variant of a worm family that targets MSN and Windows Messenger clients and previously posed no risk to Reuters' tightly-controlled messaging network. This is the first incident where a virus has targeted a privately controlled user community, IM security firm IMlogic reports.

Security firm Akonix reports that it has received 'multiple reports from organizations whose networks have been compromised by the Kelvir worm'. It said the latest Kelvir variant is rapidly spreading over instant messaging (IM) networks.

Like other social engineering attacks, the Kelvir-U worm sends an IM to people on an infected user's contact list that encourages the recipient to click on a URL link within the message. Once the link is opened, a version of the Spybot worm is downloaded and the worm then sends itself to the newly-infected user's contact list. Spybot opens up a backdoor on infected machines allowing them to be subsequently misused by hackers for nefarious purposes, such as distributing spam. ®"

It stoped working friday and its still not working today. Even though i have "What i'm listening to" turned on in the options i get nothing :(

I have had a quick look on the net and have not found any soloution, so if anyone has any ideas please let me know :)

NVIDIA 71.84 Drivers

I installed the new 71.84 drivers today for my graphics card and decided to ply a few games. everything seemed a bit strange and flikery, then i realised that the game was running with a refresh rate of 60hz. When i looked for the refreshrate override option in the driver settings it had gone. Seems that nvidia have removed the option for the time being as its a bit unstable. From looking around on the net a few people have sugjested using RefreshLock. I have given it a go and it seems like a good temprary fix. I just hope that nvidia will sort out there drivers.

To remove the banner add from the bottom of messenger you need to add a like to your "host" file. This lives in a deferent place depending on your version of windows.

Win 98\ME	=	C:\WINDOWS

Simply locate the host file and open it with notepad. then on a new line type in rad.msn.com

Google plans to increase the inbox storage of its Gmail Web mail service from 1GB to 2GB, and it will continue to raise that ceiling in coming weeks and months, on a rolling basis, to unspecified heights, according to a Google executive.

'Since we introduced Gmail, people have had a lot of place to store e-mail, but some of our heavier users have been approaching their limits and have been wondering what's going to happen,' says Georges Harik, Gmail's product management director. 'So, starting Friday, we're going to give people more and more space continuously and indefinitely on Gmail, as we're able to technologically.'

There are no current plans to increase Gmail's 10MB limit on attachment sizes, he says. There are also no plans to add capabilities to Gmail that would allow subscribers to turn the inbox storage into a full-featured virtual external hard drive, he says. However, Google is aware that some Gmail subscribers are using the service for this purpose, mailing files to themselves to have them stored in their Gmail inbox, he says.

The percentage of Gmail users approaching their inbox storage limit isn't large, but 'they are a number that we care about,' Harik says. 'We want our users to understand that we have a plan and that we're anticipating their needs, and that there isn't something strange that's going to happen with Gmail down the line.'"

I just added a new shout box to this page, and this is how i did it.

1. Go to www.tag-world.com

2. Create a free account.

3. Pick a style you like the look of. I went for example 3, but there are 3 other styles you can chose from. If you know your html you can recode it as you like.

4. Copy the code into your blog. i put mine after Begin #sidebar

You may also be able to use HTTP authorization, which means you can use the username@password construct in some feed readers. Add this to your feed reader:

Bit torrent

basicly what you do is download a file ending in .torrent eg "yourmum.torrent" you then open the file in your bit torrent program and it should start to download.

if you have a firewall you may need to open some ports (6881 - 6889). before i opened them myself i was getting downloads of about 10k or less. i have now opened up the ports and i can download pritty fast.

If you have not used it all i can say is gmail is the best web based email system i have ever used and after haveing to use outlook roming user and hotmail for some time gmails interface is very refresing. The beuty of gmail is that there are no folders, all you do is lable things, its very similar to Opera Softwares m2 client.

Gmail is still in beta testing at the moment so you cant just sign up, but from time to time i get invites to gmail so if anyone out there wants one let me know and i will see what i can do :)

The unexpected new browser actually integrates fairly nicely with both the Firefox and IE rendering engines; if a users hits a page that won't display properly using the Firefox rendering engine, called Gecko, they can switch to IE using the product's Site Control Menu; it will then remember to use IE in future visits to that site.

Because the new version of Netscape uses the IE rendering engine that's built into Windows, the product only runs on Windows, unlike previous Netscape versions, which ran on Mac OS, Linux, and other operating systems. That's not a huge loss, of course, as Windows still commands over 90 percent of the market.

In addition to its unique approach to rendering Web pages, the browser includes per-Web site configuration of features like cookies, ActiveX controls, Javascript, and Java. The Netscape 8.0 beta also includes a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) reader and a number of features that will be familiar to Firefox users, including pop-up ad blocking.

According to MozillaZine, an online Web journal covering The Mozilla Foundation and its products, Netscape 8.0 was outsourced to a Canadian software company called Mercurial Communications and was not created in-house by Netscape staffers. AOL had previously dismantled most of its Netscape-related development sites in July 2003, just two months after Microsoft settled its antitrust suit with AOL parent Time Warner for $750 million.

The final version of Netscape 8.0 will be based on Firefox 1.0, though the current beta appears to be based on Firefox 0.93. It's not yet possible to evaluate the beta product, unless you've recently signed up for Netscape's online forums. However, Netscape expects a widely available public beta soon."

Ok first things first if your viewing this page in internet explorer you need to click on the above link straight a way and get your self a copy of firefox.

It took me a long time to convert as i have been using ie for about 10 years but then i discovered firefox. it is probably best web browser out at them moment. All i can say is get firefox.

Another excellent browser that i have used a fair bit is Opera although you need to pay for this one its still worth a look :)

This is my first post so lets see what I hope to do with this Blog...

I hope to make this a record of different things that I have learned on the internet and more generally on the computer. Over time I hope to turn this into a useful resources for everyone.

But then again I may just forget all about it and leave it as another dead page on the net, but only time will tell.
